Modelling extreme rainfall events in Kigali city using generalized Pareto distribution

چکیده

Extreme rain events have caused numerous issues and had a significant impact on agriculture, human activities, ecology, infrastructure, casualties. The theory of extreme values has been widely applied in precipitation modelling variety other fields. This paper employs the generalized Pareto distribution, which used to analyse climates, conjunction with peak over thresholds approach investigate exceedances. occurrence intense rainfall Kigali city causes severe damage properties, infrastructure damage, people injuries, loss life, various harmful consequences. Early detection aids development implementation strategies measures mitigate negative effects before it occurs. aim this research is estimate frequency magnitude Kigali. daily data from Airport station collected by Rwanda Meteorological Agency 1990 2019 were applied. results showed that as return periods increased, so did levels, implying intensity will increase future. model's goodness was tested, study suggests model non-negative shape parameter (ξ) be good. study's findings are extremely important for understanding these also serve tool decision-making policies aimed at mitigating such events.

Modelling Extreme Temperature in Malaysia Using Generalized Extreme Value Distribution

Extreme temperature of several stations in Malaysia is modelled by fitting the monthly maximum to the Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) distribution. The Mann-Kendall (MK) test suggests a non-stationary model. Two models are considered for stations with trend and the Likelihood Ratio test is used to determine the best-fitting model. Results show that half of the stations favour a model which is l...

Characterization of the Frequency of Extreme Events by the Generalized Pareto Distribution

Recent results in extreme value theory suggest a new technique for statistical estimation of distribution tails (Embrechts et al., 1997), based on a limit theorem known as the GnedenkoPickands-Balkema-de Haan theorem. This theorem gives a natural limit law for peak-overthreshold values in the form of the Generalized Pareto Distribution (GPD), which is a family of distributions with two paramete...

Active Distribution Networks Restoration after Extreme Events

After extreme events such as floods, thunderstorms, blizzards and hurricanes there will be devastating effects in the distribution networks which may cause a partial or complete blackout. Then, the major concern for the system operators is to restore the maximum critical loads as soon as possible by available generation units.  In order to solve this problem, this paper provides a restoration s...

The Beta Generalized Pareto Distribution

A new distribution called the beta-generalized Pareto is proposed. Several properties of this distribution are presented. The expressions for the mean, mean deviation, variance, and entropies are obtained. The method of maximum likelihood is proposed to estimate the parameters of the distribution. The flexibility of this distribution is illustrated in an application to a real data set.
